Many people who are currently dieting seem to have a love/hate relationship with calories. They seem to avoid them like the plague and often up not eating enough calories, essentially putting their body into starvation mode. They need to realize that when dealing with weight loss calories actually need to be consumed. Dieters have to find the balance to ensure they can get down to their ideal weight.

Your body needs calories to function; you should never consume less than the 1,200 calories a day. Keep in mind it takes 3,500 excess calories to gain a pound, so if you eat an average of 1,200-1,600 calories a day you should be able to begin losing weight.

During your weight loss calories need to count, avoid empty calories found in soda and candy; if your diet is filled with healthy filling foods you're less likely to binge later. If you are physically active you can get with a higher daily calorie count, as you burn off calories your body needs more food to fuel it; although you can eat more when exercising don't use it as an excuse to overeat.
